Penuma® is the only penis enlargement surgery cleared for commercial use under the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) 510(k) regulation. The device is FDA-cleared for cosmetic enhancement. Penuma is an elective procedure so it is not currently covered by insurance.
Patients pay out-of-pocket for the Penuma procedure; the cost varies by implant center but is generally $16,000. Patients must complete a rigorous intake questionnaire and complete the required intake steps in order to be considered candidates for the procedure. Surgeons follow this process in order to help identify candidates who have realistic expectations and will receive the greatest benefits from the procedure.
James Elist, MD, FACS, FICS, of Beverly Hills, California, founded the procedure. He’s currently one of only a handful of surgeons who have been trained to deliver this new therapy.
Read on to learn more about how the Penuma® procedure works, the risks, and whether it’s proven to successfully enlarge a penis.
How does this procedure work?
The Penuma® is a crescent-shaped piece of medical-grade silicone inserted under the skin to enhance the appearance of a man’s penis in a manner that is similar to how breast implants make a woman’s breasts appear larger. As with breast implants, the Penuma® implant is customized to fit each man’s individual penis size and shape in order to create the most ideal appearance possible.
The process of placing the implant is very simple. A small incision is made in the space between the top line of pubic hair growth and the base of a man’s penis. Once the incision is made, the Penuma® implant can be inserted just below the skin and the retained in place through the use of carefully placed sutures.
What are the results?
The Penuma® implant causes an immediate change in the appearance of a man’s penis. Most notable is that the penis itself “hangs” as fully as possible. This gives an immediate visual effect that causes the man’s pendulous penis to be as physically large as possible; a “shower” vs. a “grower” in the common vernacular.
There are additional gains in both flaccid and erect penile girth. On average, men will experience gains of 1.5” to 2.0” in girth due to the implant. These gains are immediate and they are retained as long as the implant remains in place.
Of course, as with any medical procedure, individual results will vary. The Penuma® implant is not appropriate for everyone.
